Abstract

Background: The word "rheumatism" or "rheumatic disease" refers to a variety of ailments that cause persistent, frequently fluctuating pain in the joints and/or connective tissue. At least 100 diverse illnesses are included by the term "rheumatism," which does not define any one particular disorder. The study was created to investigate the range of rheumatic disease among patients presenting as outpatients in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation department of a tertiary level hospital due to the dearth of research on this topic. Objective: To find out the prevalence of different rheumatic disease their respective commodities at a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department at DMCH for six months. The study sought to enroll patients who had musculoskeletal problems or systemic symptoms that would indicate rheumatic illness. By conducting a face-to-face interview with the respondents and utilizing a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire, information about the respondents' socio-demographic characteristics, disease duration, clinical symptoms and signs, and investigations report was gathered. Use of SPSS 16 was made for data analysis. Results: The average age of the respondents was 46.3612.25 years, with 5011.68 years for men and 441912.03 years for women (ages 21–70), or 35.7% men and 64.3% women. Patients who were low-income were the majority (43.5%), followed by middle-class patients (36.5%) and upper-class patients (20.1%). 54.17% of cases had articular symptoms, 43.23% had degenerative joint conditions, and 10.94% had inflammatory joint disorders. Rheumatoid arthritis and Ankylosing spondylitis were the two most prevalent types of inflammatory arthritis, while lumbar spondylosis and peripheral osteoarthrosis predominated among non-inflammatory arthritis (28.92% and 28.31%), respectively. Of the specific illnesses covered in soft tissue rheumatism, nonspecific back pain was the most prevalent (60.12%), followed by adhesive shoulder capsulitis (25.77%). Conclusion: Four different categories of ailments were seen in this tertiary care hospital: arthritic conditions, both non-inflammatory and inflammatory, soft tissue rheumatism, bone disorders, and multi-system disorders.
